The slow-travel weekend: finding quiet without leaving Nigeria

A restorative break does not need a packed itinerary. Here is a more deliberate way to plan forty-eight hours away.

The pressure to optimise a holiday can make a weekend away feel suspiciously like work. Slow travel proposes the opposite: fewer stops, longer meals and enough empty space to notice where you are.

Start with one base rather than a multi-city route. Choose accommodation close to the experience you care about, whether that is a gallery, a walking trail or simply a veranda with good morning light. Then leave one half-day completely unplanned.

A practical two-day rhythm

Use the first afternoon to settle in and take a short orientation walk. Save the main activity for the second morning, when you are rested. Eat at places that reflect the area instead of chasing the same menu you know at home.

Most importantly, define rest for yourself. For one traveller it is silence; for another it is live music and a crowded table. The goal is not to perform relaxation but to return with more energy than you left with.

Good storytelling starts with listening closely, checking the facts and giving the people behind the culture room to speak.
